Oh man, if it wouldn’t enrage my Dutch ancestors I would 100% adopt this 😂

Loved this! I havent thought about culture specifically as a neurodivergent mask before. Really great insight

Would you be okay if I restacked this?

Charity Galgani, DNP's avatar

Absolutely!

Thanks, Charity! It only occurred to me the other day that these factors might be related and - to a certain extent - reinforce each other. I guess there’s another rabbit hole 🕳️ I have just discovered … 🐇

This is something I have probably thought of too much 😂 It’s really interesting when you get into it. It’s not so much the neurodivergence doesn’t exist in some cultures but that those cultures are structured in a way that supports them more. For example, “they don’t make eye contact” is something we’re all told is an issue Autistic people have but in some cultures direct eye contact is considered impolite.

Yes, indeed! I noticed that @Lee Hopkins made a comment recently how much more ND-friendly Vietnam appeared to him compared to Australia. This might actually be an under-researched topic.

I am partly of the belief that being a foreigner here is why I can be ND and get away with it. Whilst the VN culture itself is very prescribed and conservative, being a foreigner gives one licence for the very sound reason that ‘all foreigners are weird, aren’t they?’

Q.E.D.

I actually felt a bit like that when moving to Australia … one can always claim a certain level of cultural ignorance …
